I posted about the Benesse House, but today, I want to share my experience from the Benesse House Museum. Again, all designed by the amazing Tadao Ando. I couldn’t take any pictures inside, but there is this outside area where I could take some photos…

The artworks you see here are by Hiroshi Sugimoto Time Exposed , 1980-97

There were so many things to enjoy this area, my friend and I spent good amount of time and we could easily spent more…

His photographs are serving as a time capsule for a series of events in time… with the waterlines at different times…

The walls end and you see ocean in between the walls — but notice the ocean waterline and the artwork waterline? It aligns! So I guess you are seeing the “current” in here… so very awesome… Also, I couldn’t take a photo, but from here, you can see a tiny something on the little island… We’d been wondering and later we found out that it’s also his same series waterline work hang it on the island! So that aligns with all the work as well. Amazing.

Like this one. This is the other one we found — what a discovery! We were pretty excited.

Even stairs are designed great…

Another art you can enjoy in between the walls are these boats installation (yellow and black — do you see?). These are exactly the same from the painting in the museum, when you look at the painting and look outside, you see the same art. How awesome! right?

Really enjoyed visiting! I attended a little tour also, and that was very cool, too.

I want to post about the Benesse House we stayed at — great experience all around! There are few parts where you can stay, but we stayed at the Museum room which was a rare and awesome experience. We enjoyed the museum in the middle of the night, too :)

A Kaiseki dinner at the Museum restaurant Issen. I love kaiseki — it is work of art indeed. So. very. pretty. and goooooood.

A Basquiat work:

After the dinner, we went up to the Oval area. Only hotel guests at the museum or the oval can visit this area with a little cable car. These blue doors are to the hotel rooms, there is an oval shaped water fountain in the middle and the top is also oval shaped, opened to the sky.

The sky, the reflections, the lighting… it was beautiful…

Next morning, we went up to this area again for another look. A view from the little cable car you take…

Morning Oval — it looks so different!

You can go up and walk around and look down…

Cool surroundings: fountain.

The rectangle area is like a painting, but that’s a glass wall and crosswalk.

I highly recommend visiting/staying there if you ever have a chance! Thank you to my best friend, Mitchy, too!!! Love you! xoxo

This week, I am going to take you all to Naoshima. This was one of my highlights of the trip, my friend and I spent our whole day and a half at Benesse Art Site — it was amazing! Really enjoyed everything. Must go back there again someday…

It’s a ferry boat ride away from Takamatsu port…

We are going to Chichu Art Museum today…

Pretty flowers were everywhere…

The word ‘chichu’ means ‘in the ground’ and true to its name, the Museum is built almost entirely into the hill. The bold design thus maintains harmony with the natural landscape. The architect used only the most basic materials – concrete, steel, glass and wood – to create this masterpiece. (via SIAF website)

It is designed by Tadao Ando — his work is truly amazing, the space, the concrete, the atmosphere… you have to be there and feel the space to know what I mean, you just get stunned by the whole space! Oh, I loved it.

Inside of the museum is strictly no photography… you just have to go there :) Even though there are only few work from Claude Monet, James Turrell, and Walter De Maria, the each room takes your breath away, I could only say “amazing” over and over again!!

There is a little outside area from the cafe…

and of course the great Seto Inland Sea view…

The building you see is the Benesse House hotel — where we stayed! I’ll talk about that later…

Last Sunday, I visited MoMA and found lots of inspirations — will have couple more posts later, but here, I wanted to share some typographic inspirations from the walls. Love looking at museum walls besides the exhibition (of course) because it always has cool design and typography.

Bruce Nauman: Days (very interesting exhibition – “sound sculpture”)

A huge wall full of days. Monday through Sunday. Not in exact order. Caught my eye. (and makes sense for the exhibition, too)

Rising Currents: Projects for New York’s Waterfront (also an interesting exhibition)

I liked the project description wall. Nicely designed.

and this was on the 2nd floor wall — I’m not sure if this is a work in progress or if this is it… I didn’t see any project caption or anything, but either way, it caught my eye.

One more post from my MoMA visit… Martin Kippenberger: The Problem Perspective. Just to be in the entrance area of this exhibition made me so excited – walls of great posters he designed for his exhibitions! Each one is so different and unique, my eye was so busy just to take in. I couldn’t take any photos inside the exhibitions, but you will find so many of his works including paintings, sculptures, installations, drawings, prints… lots of stuff. Lots of energy. It was cool.

I especially liked this hand-lettering poster for SF MoMA exhibition. Back in 1991.

It is going on until May 11th, if you are around in NYC, you should go check it out!

I went to MoMA last week and saw a few exhibitions including this Tangled Alphabets by León Ferrari and Mira Schendel – the title itself was so intriguing to begin with and so I was really looking forward to this exhibition – it was really interesting and cool, it was an art created by letters and hand-writing alphabets! It wasn’t design exhibition, it was a true art.

The exhibition starting area. I like the different fonts and words all played around with each other.

The wall explaining who they are:

another shot of the title of the exhibition – it really shows how this exhibition is about.

Some images from the exhibition that I liked:

*All the images from here down are from Tangled Alphabets website.

If you are in NY area, I would recommend checking it out, it’s going on until June 15th this year!

We went to Museum of Fine Arts, Boston last Saturday for the opening of the SMFA Traveling Scholars — this very noble scholarship award that our friend Niq received from School of the Museum of Fine Arts — and of course to see him and his film for this exhibition!

Museum of Fine Arts, Boston :: entrance is on the other side, but back side is already great.

The entrance:

Big head statue :: there was another one on the other side and that one had opened eyes.

Our friend Niq’s work description:

“Film comes alive when projected but exists as material in its dormant state. In ‘Sunburns’ I am exploring the intersection of materiality and visuality. Solar energy has been focused through a magnifying glass and its imprint burned into the film. Projection transforms the process; the light of the projector takes the place of the sun and the eye becomes the receiving surface.” — Nicolas Brynolfson

How interesting. The film was really interesting and beautiful to me, every burned frame was different and created an amazing art. It was like watching a slide show of painting, but it also had a rhythm.

His projector:

OK, there was no way to capture his awesome film nicely on my camera in the dark, but here are some that I tried… these are the creation of Niq and the sun.

There are 6 more artists’ work in this exhibition, they are all different type of art, if you are in Boston area, this is going on until May 3rd so you should go check it out.

Congratulations again, Niq, for this great film, great exhibition!!

Randy and I took Monday afternoon off and went to American Museum of Natural History. There were lots of cool inspirations there, I wished we had more time…

Entrance:

Theodore Roosevelt statue:

I took some photos for my inspirations and here they are. I hope they’ll give you some ideas for your project, too…

They had lots of wild animals diorama and they were all amazing to look at. It was really lively (even though nothing was alive!) and it looked like a real wild life everyday scene. I especially liked colors and patterns on the animals.

Love the colors. Dark line gives nice impact.

The pattern is so unique and caught my eye.

Love the stripes in just one area like this.

Simply beautiful.

Great shapes.

Love the composition. Dynamic.

—-

From here, it’s a dinosaur area!

Half 3D graph. Very cool.

Found letter H in dinosaur’s bone.

Found letter S in dinosaur’s bone.

Glass case with nice typography/description it was so cool to look at.

wooooo. Isn’t it awesome?

I can’t believe it’s September already! It’s still hot in here, but I know fall is coming right soon… I don’t want summer to be over yet, though, I’m excited about fall, too, must be pretty.

Anyway, on Saturday, I went to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to catch the Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy exhibition before it ended (yesterday) and I am so glad I got to see it! It was so awesome!

The Met:

The entrance:

Went straight to the Superheros exhibition — no picture was allowed so this is from the website. The exhibition was grouped by the different body type/superhero and there were real costumes that were worn in the movies as well. It was amazing to see how each designer (Dior, Jean Paul Gaultier, Bernhard Willhelm, Dolce & Gabbana… to name a few) was inspired by the superheroes and put their own vision into it and create something new. oh and all the mannequins were wearing amazing shoes!

Got to also see Jeff Koons work on the roof:

The roof has the view of Manhattan and Martini bar! (Friday and Saturday) You can also have Café drinks and food including beer and wine everyday.

Also saw J. M. W. Turner exhibition. Great artisit. Loved his usage of colors, depiction of the sky, sun, and the lights on all of his paintings.

It is a huge museum and there a lot more to see, but that was all we could do. The museum store is great, too!
